@impactEduk

@impacteduk is a community for educators to discuss and debate the innovations and practices in education and evaluate them against research for impact on children’s learning. It is a community interested in evidence and rigour. This is not the place for anecdotes and opinions, unless they are to stimulate discussion. This is a community where people are respected, and ideas are evaluated critically.

Free Schools

So, what do we actually know?

  1. We know that Free Schools are, like it or not, going to be part of the education policy landscape for the next 5-8 years.
    What we don’t know, is what their shelf life will be like after that.

  2. We know that the DfE are experimenting, and seem happy that there are grey areas, and willing to accept fuzzy edges and failures.
    What we don’t know is how the accountability and governance story around this policy will evolve.

  3. We know that, despite considerable structural and operational freedoms, very few that have been approved are using them.
    What we don’t know is if there is a bias in the selection process towards conservatism (small C).
    ie Where is all the innovation?
